Earlier this month the Associated Press reported on a new sleep study being conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. The study’s goal was to discover how regulated sleep schedules impact long-haul truckers. Funded by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to the tune of $2.5 million, researchers hope to uncover whether sleep plays any role in a driver’s skill behind the wheel. After hitting a record low five years ago, deaths along California roads have risen. This astounding number of roadway fatalities in California is a juxtaposition of what is happening nationwide. This news comes despite a new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that suggests highway deaths nationwide have declined.

Reports of DUI accidents in Fresno have occurred with even police officers. Two area officers were treated and released following a violent collision with a drunk driver. As reported by ABC 30, the accident happened near Bullard Avenue and Fig Garden Drive.
The officers were responding to a call at an apartment building. As they were pulling out the complex, a truck crashed into the side of the car. The driver of the cruiser needed to be pried from the police car. The officer riding in the passenger side was able to get out an arrest the at-fault driver. The driver of the truck was booked on felony DUI charges. Both officers were released from the hospital following the wreck. Continue reading
An early morning collision in Central Fresno between a motorcycle and large pickup truck has left one person dead and another clinging for life. As reported by the Fresno Bee, the Fresno motorcycle accident happened around 8:30 a.m. on Monday at the corner of Blackstone and Cornell Avenue.
Witnesses reported seeing two people on a Harley Davidson motorcycle – a 54-year old man who driving and a 53 year-old female passenger – heading northbound on Blackstone at a high speed. Authorities estimate that they could have been traveling close to 70 mph. At the same time, another driver in a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up was heading west on Cornell toward a gas station. The truck driver failed to notice the motorcycle entering the intersection and collided with the speeding bike. Continue reading
